GAPC EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM

Criminals target and defraud Floridians of all ages and capabilities, but we know that fraud affects each generation differently. This presentation will explore the types of scams and tactics most frequently used in scams against older Floridians. The presentation will also cover steps that guardians and caregivers can take to help prevent elder fraud, along with best practices and resources for reporting and responding to fraud when it occurs.

This presentation will provide attendees with:

  1. Identification of the top trending frauds and scams impacting older Floridians.
  2. An understanding of fraud reporting tools, resources and best practices.
  3. Steps for guardians to prevent or reduce the risk of fraud for vulnerable clients.

SPEAKER BIO

Karen Murillo is an Associate State Director of Advocacy who leads AARP Florida’s fraud prevention efforts across the state. Karen works on state and local policy issues that impact older Floridians, including legislation focused on strengthening Florida’s fraud and exploitation prevention and enforcement efforts. Prior to joining AARP, Karen served as a criminal prosecutor, first in Palm Beach County, Florida, then as an Assistant Statewide Prosecutor and the Senior Protection Team Coordinator for the Florida Office of the Attorney General. Karen has extensive experience with prosecuting financial exploitation, fraud, and elder abuse matters and serves as Co-Chair of the Florida Bar Elder Law Section’s Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation Committee.
